Understanding Your Lab Results: A Physician's Plain-Language Guide

Lab reports can feel like a foreign language. Dr. Antoniou breaks down the most common panels and what the numbers actually mean for your health.

You receive a notification that your lab results are available. You open the portal, see a column of numbers with reference ranges, and notice that two values are flagged in red. Your physician has not yet called. What do you do?

This guide is intended to give you a working understanding of the most common laboratory panels — not to replace a conversation with your physician, but to make that conversation more productive.

The Complete Blood Count (CBC)

The CBC measures the cellular components of your blood. The key values are:

  • Hemoglobin and Hematocrit: These measure red blood cell mass and are the primary indicators of anemia. Low values may indicate iron deficiency, B12 or folate deficiency, chronic disease, or less commonly, a bone marrow problem.
  • White Blood Cell Count (WBC): Elevated WBC often indicates infection or inflammation. A very high WBC can occasionally signal a blood disorder. Low WBC may reflect viral illness, certain medications, or immune suppression.
  • Platelets: These are involved in clotting. Very low platelet counts can increase bleeding risk; very high counts may indicate inflammation or, rarely, a bone marrow condition.

The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)

The CMP provides a snapshot of kidney function, liver function, electrolyte balance, and blood sugar.

  • Creatinine and BUN: These are waste products filtered by the kidneys. Elevated levels suggest reduced kidney function.
  • Liver enzymes (AST, ALT, ALP): Mildly elevated liver enzymes are common and often transient. Significantly elevated values warrant further investigation.
  • Glucose: Fasting glucose above 100 mg/dL is considered prediabetic; above 126 mg/dL on two separate occasions meets criteria for diabetes.
  • Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate): These are tightly regulated by the body. Abnormalities can reflect dehydration, kidney disease, medication effects, or other conditions.

The Lipid Panel

The lipid panel measures cholesterol fractions and triglycerides. LDL cholesterol is the primary target for cardiovascular risk reduction. HDL cholesterol is protective — higher is generally better. Triglycerides above 150 mg/dL are associated with increased cardiovascular and metabolic risk.

Importantly, a single lipid panel value is less meaningful than the trend over time and the context of your overall cardiovascular risk profile. A patient with no other risk factors and an LDL of 130 mg/dL is in a very different clinical situation than a patient with diabetes, hypertension, and a family history of early heart disease with the same LDL.

A Note on Reference Ranges

Reference ranges are derived from population statistics — they represent the range within which 95% of healthy individuals fall. This means that 5% of healthy people will have at least one value outside the reference range on any given panel. A single flagged value, in isolation, is often not cause for alarm. Context, trends, and clinical correlation are what matter.

When in doubt, call your physician's office. A brief conversation is almost always more reassuring — and more informative — than an internet search.
